Virginia Union University officials placed the Northside campus on lockdown Sunday afternoon after a shooting left one student injured and prompted an immediate shelter-in-place order for all students and staff.

The university issued the emergency alert on Oct. 20 following gunfire on the campus grounds. Administrators ordered the security response while law enforcement secured the area, WRIC 8News reported.

Campus Security Response

The lockdown restricted movement across the university as campus police and local authorities investigated the scene. University officials confirmed the shooting victim is a student at the institution, according to WRIC 8News. Emergency responders transported the student to a local hospital for treatment, though the university has not released the student's identity or condition.

Richmond Police Department officers assisted campus security in establishing a perimeter around the site. Authorities have not provided details regarding a suspect or a motive for the violence.

Ongoing Investigation

The university maintained the lockdown as a precautionary measure while the investigation continued. Students received updates through the campus emergency notification system throughout the afternoon, WRIC 8News said. Officials have not stated when they expect to resume normal campus operations or if classes will face disruptions on Monday.
