Hosted at PAAL’s gallery in Old Towne Petersburg, the exhibition marks the first dedicated two-person showcase focused solely on the artistic dialogue between the father-son duo despite both artists’ extensive national recognition and decades-long careers.
“Father/Son” brings together more than 50 years of Chuck Scalin’s work alongside Noah Scalin’s contemporary mixed-media practice, placing their pieces side-by-side in a conversation about artistic inheritance, experimentation, mentorship, and evolving visual language across generations.
Chuck Scalin, who joined Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts in 1968, spent 35 years as a professor at VCU before later teaching at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School. His work, rooted in collage, assemblage, and drawing, has appeared in more than 250 national and international exhibitions.
Noah Scalin is internationally recognized for his large-scale installations and innovative use of found materials, commercial stickers, and pop culture imagery. He is the creator of the Webby Award-winning Skull-A-Day project and founder of Another Limited Rebellion. His work has been exhibited at venues including Times Square, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Mütter Museum, while also being featured in publications such as The New York Times, USA Today, Fast Company, Hi-Fructose, and Juxtapoz.
“This exhibition represents a meaningful moment for our organization and for Virginia’s arts community,” said David Bartlett, Chair of the Exhibition Committee at the Petersburg Area Art League. “Bringing together two artists of this caliber in direct conversation with one another offers audiences a clear view of artistic influence across generations.”
The exhibition opens with a public reception on June 12 from 5–9 p.m. in conjunction with Petersburg’s Friday for the Arts event. Due to strong early interest, the exhibition has already been extended through Aug. 8.
“Father/Son” will be on view at the Petersburg Area Art League, located at 7 E. Old St. in Petersburg. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
