Richmond’s iconic downtown park — home to Friday Cheers, the Folk Festival, and countless concerts and community events — is getting a $30 million facelift. Construction starts this fall, with a complete reimagining of the island’s layout, walkways, and gathering spaces.
To make room for the upgrades, Friday Cheers will pause for the entire 2026 season, possibly returning in 2027. The plan includes new landscaping, expanded seating, better river access, and design features meant to transform Browns Island into a true year-round destination — part public park, part performance venue, part cultural hub.
Yes, it’s commercialization — but it’s also community. As we move further into an isolated, screen-first culture, projects like this remind us that public space is still worth fighting for.
What do you think? Is Browns Island’s facelift a necessary investment in Richmond’s future, or another example of misplaced priorities?
