He emancipated himself at 16 because he decided nobody was going to be in charge of how he ate.
James is a licensed therapist, Army veteran, foster care survivor, and founder of Men to Heal — a movement built for Black men who have never seen themselves in a therapist's chair. He lost his father at five, became a ward of the state at eight, deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and built a private practice, a book, a board game, and a Ted X talk out of all of it.
In this episode we go deep on why Black men avoid therapy, how depression gets misdiagnosed as anger, why your partner was never equipped to hold what you gave them, and what it actually means to stop waiting until the eulogy to say what needs to be said.
What you will take away from this episode:
Why the image of depression keeps Black men from getting help
How to find the right person to talk to when nobody in your circle knows how
Why accountability without the right people around you goes nowhere
