Over 100 years ago one of Richmond’s most persistent urban legends was born in a collapsed tunnel under Church Hill.
The rail tunnel opened in the 1870s, was shuttered when a river trestle took over, and decades later crews went back in to repair it.
Bricks began to fall and a cave-in killed workers and buried a steam locomotive and cars in the dark. The tunnel was sealed; the bodies and train were never recovered.
Out of that chaos came the “Richmond Vampire.”
Witnesses saw a torn-up, bloodied vampire figure stumble from the tunnel with missing teeth, ripped clothing — and a mysterious monster was born.
Over time the story drifted to Hollywood Cemetery and W.W. Pool, proof of how wild stories turn into folklore when a city doesn’t have answers.
