Richmond’s indie, hipster, hardcore, basement era had a uniform: busted Vans, old band tees, a PBR stuffed in your back pocket. What started as confusion - why a disheveled look, why skateboards and fixed-gears, why every night ended at The Camel — became belonging. We revisit the subcultures that shaped a generation of RVA creatives: bands, bartending shifts, late shows, and the kind of house parties you’ll never find again.
RVA’s creative identity wasn’t originally built in galleries or boardrooms — it was built in cramped venues, makeshift DJ booths, and warehouse floors. If you were there, you remember. If you weren’t, this is why the city still feels like a magnet.
