Richmond muralist Mickael Broth, know as @thenightowl made headlines after painting “Not For Sale” over his iconic mural “The Witch” on the Canal Walk downtown.
The act was in protest of his work being used without permission by a new pickleball and padel complex built inside the historic Haxall Hydroelectric Plant — purchased last year for over $3 million.
The complex, which now features courts, a café, and ongoing outdoor construction, has sparked backlash from community members who feel the once-public art space has been commercialized and fenced off.
As they build more courts and a restaurant in front of the murals, the debate continues: artistic integrity and community access vs. private development.
“Access to the murals is completely removed,” one resident said.
The owner responded, “We’re trying to find a balance… but this is a private space.”
