‘Richmond is the new NYC’ is internet memelord speak for saying that several young influencers moved to RVA and immediately discovered what front porches are.
Apparently, New York has Broadway, world-class museums and a 24-hour subway—but Richmond has the James River, reasonably achievable parking and a brewery where your dog has more friends than you do.
The Fan is now the West Village, Carytown is Times Square, and the GRTC Pulse is our subway (as long as you want to travel in one extremely specific direction). Instead of bodegas, we have vape shops, vintage stores and Francine the Lowe’s cat. And while Richmond is still cheaper than New York (barely), locals would like everyone to stop announcing that before a landlord hears you.
Richmond is the New York for people who want a backyard, go to bed by midnight and consider encountering 3 acquaintances at the same farmers market ‘the hustle and bustle of city life.’
