We took on a challenge to completely reset our wardrobes and pick out some new outfits — but instead of buying anything new, we did it entirely 2nd hand through Goodwill here in Central Virginia. We visited the Goodwill in Short Pump, VA to meet with Laura Faison - chief communications officer at Goodwill Virginia.

After clearing out our closets and donating everything we no longer wear, we got a behind-the-scenes look at what actually happens after you drop off your items — how they’re sorted, processed, and put back into circulation for someone else in the community. Then we headed into the store to see if we could rebuild our wardrobes from scratch using only what we could find.

Goodwill is often thought of as just a thrift store, but the reality is that it plays a much bigger role. Every donation and every purchase helps support job training programs, career development, and opportunities for individuals right here in Central and Coastal Virginia.

With Earth Day approaching, this challenge is also a reminder of how much we consume — and how much of what we own still has value. Instead of sitting in a closet or ending up in a landfill, these items can be reused, repurposed, and given a second life.

Huge thank you to Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia for having us, showing us the full process, and for everything they’re doing to support the community.

If you have items you no longer use, consider donating. And if you’ve never stepped inside your local Goodwill, take the time to go see what you can find.
