America’s Healthiest City exists to track a ten-year partnership working to make the greater Richmond region the healthiest in America by 2033. Host Will Melton sits down with people already doing that work, and this episode’s guest has spent more than two decades building hers in soil and breath.

Richmond herbalist and flower farmer Nitika Achalam of True Grit Farm and Flower explains how plants and a single conscious breath rebuild connection in a region racing to get healthier.

Nitika Achalam is the founder and creative director of True Grit Farm and Flower, a clinical herbalist, reiki master, and yoga therapist. She came to Richmond to study anthropology at Virginia Commonwealth University, focusing on how ancient cultures used plant medicine to prevent and treat disease. From there, she moved to the west to study herbal medicine and clinical herbalism, then settled back in the Richmond region with her husband, Joshua. She also leads Project Yoga Richmond as its Executive Director, where Melton first met her as a student in her yoga class years before this interview.

Their conversation moves from the anthropology of plant medicine into the physiology of a single conscious breath, the kind of pause Achalam says most people are too busy to take even once a day. From there it lands on the farm itself: several acres in Reedville on Virginia’s Northern Neck, where True Grit grows medicinal, native, and ornamental plants side by side and designs arrangements that blend all three.

True Grit’s work splits into three threads. Bouquet bars and corporate workshops use floral design as a low-stakes way for teams to build trust together. Farewell florals let Achalam translate a life into an arrangement, working from family stories to choose plants that mean something specific to the person being honored. True Gruit also focuses on sustainability practice, drying blooms and reducing the floral industry’s waste.

Achalam also previews “Give Them Their Flowers”, a storytelling activation created with her husband Joshua that debuted at this year’s 804 Day. The idea: let people publicly thank the teachers, mentors, and first responders who shaped them while those people are still around to hear it.
