What if reading local news earned you points? What if your neighborhood competed against The Fan for Richmond bragging rights? What if answering a trivia question in your morning email leveled up your standing on a city-wide leaderboard?
That's exactly what we're building — live.
In this stream, I'm designing and starting to build Channel RVA Games: a full community engagement layer embedded inside channelrva.com that turns local news readers into active competitors. This isn't a side project — it's a complete gamification strategy for Channel RVA with a path to licensing the whole stack to local news outlets in other cities.
Here's what we're building toward:
The Cred Economy — a universal points system that rewards every action on the platform: answering daily trivia, submitting neighborhood news tips, photographing Richmond murals, validating local business listings, competing in neighborhood challenges. You earn Cred. Your neighborhood earns Cred. The leaderboard moves.
Turf Wars — Richmond's neighborhoods compete for city dominance. The Fan vs. Scott's Addition. Church Hill vs. Jackson Ward. Standing is determined by weekly Cred accumulation plus head-to-head Challenge Events sponsored by local businesses. Seasons reset monthly. Champions get permanent badges.
Right Restaurant, Wrong Details — a crowdsourced restaurant data validation game where players review three random Richmond restaurants per session and confirm or correct the details: Is it still open? Is it vegan-friendly? What neighborhood is it actually in? Every answer improves Channel RVA's living local business database — and earns you Cred.
Daily Trivia — one Richmond-focused question per day, embedded directly in the Channel RVA newsletter. One tap. Earns Cred. Drives daily opens, daily clicks, daily return visits.
The Sponsorship Layer — every game mode has a sponsor slot. Local businesses fund Challenge Events, own leaderboard placements, drop limited edition badges, and boost restaurant listings. This is the revenue model — and it sells itself.
The build lives inside channelrva.com. Auth is already wired. Supabase is the backend. We're using Lovable for the build sprint and documenting the full work plan in real time.
If you're building local media, community platforms, or engagement-driven products — this one's worth watching.
